У статті йдеться про те, що центральна проблема природи права походить від рефлексивності права: практики, що складають правову систему, самі посилаються на ідею «права». У цій роботі критикуються теорії (такі як теорія Раза), що розглядають ідею права як таку, що ідентифікує конкретний тип соціального інституту, проте не відіграє жодної ролі в судовій правовій думці.
